New Mexico State-Based Healthcare Exchange: Not Ready Till Oct 2014

The new Healthcare Exchange begins January 2014. Each state may choose to have a state-based, default to federal, or have a partnership between the state and federal government. New Mexico has chosen state-based, has conditional approval, however the state is having some time constraint issues in implementing the IT system by the Healthcare Exchange deadline. Therefore until October 2014, the New Mexico Health Insurance the federal government will help in running the individual exchange. New Mexico will maintain plan management and consumer assistance functions, while the federal government will operate the IT system. The state will run the SHOP (business) exchange.


A state-based program is one in which the state follows the guidelines set by the federal government which must offer the same set of ObamaCare essential benefits, however the state sets up their own exchange for the new Bronze Plan, Silver Plan, Gold Plan, and Platinum Plan.
