Feds to set up Alaska’s Exchange

Alaska chose to let the federal government set up the state’s Exchange. Alaska decided to not build their own Exchange because they worried about the long-term costs after the feds stopped supplying the wealth of grant money initially available to states. Governor Sean Parnell described his reason for declining the president’s plan , “Alaska wasn’t alone in saying “no” to the health exchange bait-and-switch.”

Plans available for Alaskans

The new plans are called the Affordable Care Act Bronze Plan, Silver Plan, Gold Plan, and Platinum Plan. At this time we are unsure of which providers will offer their new plans nor do we know the monthly premium rate. As of October 1, 2013 the Exchange goes live and we will know more then. However, for an estimate based off other states please call 800-930-7956.

There are also off-Exchange plans available now that Alaskans can purchase without having to go through the Marketplace. These plans can save you time if you don’t qualify for subsidies and some of these plans may have lower premiums.

Alaska’s Higher Federal Poverty Line

Due to the increased FPL Alaskans may receive premium subsidies and cost-sharing subsidies to help with monthly costs and help with costs when you seek medical care, respectively, up to approximately $48,800 for an individual.
