The Essential plans by Blue Shield of CA allow members to control the total annual amount that they spend on copayments and deductibles; these plans also include dental and vision coverage at no additional cost. The Essential 1750 plan features an annual deductible of $1,750, which also serves as the out-of-pocket limit. Unlimited lifetime benefits are also provided under this plan. Three office visits per calendar year are allowed with the deductible waived, at a $40 copayment. After the deductible has been met, Blue Shield covers 100% of the cost. For other medical services, members are responsible for 100% of the negotiated rate, until the deductible is satisfied. After the deductible has been reached, Blue Shield will cover all of the expenses. Prescription drug coverage is for generic drugs only.
