Early Users of Health Savings Accounts Say So Far, So-So

(Excerpt) By January W. Payne Washington Post Staff Writer.When Robert Payne, 61, needed back surgery last year, he said he wasn't worried about how to pay for it. Payne, a self-employed architect in Richmond, pulled $5,500 -- the amount of his health insurance deductible for such procedures -- from a savings account he uses exclusively for medical expenses. Group Aims to Improve Quality/Affordability of Health Care.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—The Leapfrog Group, with support from The Commonwealth Fund and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has developed the first public Web-based incentive and reward programs aimed at improving health care.. The Leapfrog Incentive and Reward Compendium is designed to help raise awareness among purchasers, health plans, and health care providers about innovative schemes that are already in place to improve the quality and affordability of health care.

Voters hold fate of California health insurance mandate

(Excerpt)By Joel B. Finkelstein, AMNews staff. Oct. 25, 2004. Washington -- A California law that would require some employers to offer health insurance is facing a new challenge before it even goes into effect. The employer mandate was signed into law in the waning days of Gov. Gray Davis' administration last year. It would require medium and large companies to provide a minimum standard of health coverage to employees or pay into a government-run program.

Employer-provided health insurance falls for third year

The costs to working families of the recession and jobless recovery have been amply documented in terms of jobs, wages, and incomes (Mishel et al. 2004). Yet the persistently weak labor market in tandem with sharply increasing health costs have led to a related problem for working families: the loss of employer-provided health coverage. This report examines the erosion of employer-based coverage since 2000, with an emphasis on the characteristics—gender, race, education, and wage and income levels—of those who have lost coverage.
